Gain is not tax payable

Ordinary capital gain = sale proceeds − adjusted cost base (ACB) − eligible selling costs. For CAD 15,000 proceeds, CAD 10,100 ACB and CAD 150 selling costs, the gain is CAD 4,750 and its ordinary 50% taxable portion is CAD 2,375. Your tax depends on your income, losses, deductions and circumstances.

Scope and currency

This simplified model covers an ordinary investment sold from a non-registered account. It excludes real estate, business income, gifts, estates and registered accounts. Enter transaction amounts in Canadian dollars using the relevant exchange rate at each transaction date. The single-purchase option is only for one purchase with no other ACB adjustments; otherwise use your tracked ACB. A capital loss is not a refund, and superficial-loss rules may restrict it.

The existing French engine uses ordinary 50% inclusion; no CAD 250,000 threshold or two-thirds rate is introduced in translation. Sources: Income Tax Act section 38 and CRA capital gains and losses guidance.
